We have bolted in the battery box. We have also made the chain the correct length. We are now in the process of completeing the steering column. We are also building a custom steering wheel for are vehicle. Also have ordered are custom bushing for the steering mechanism.

We came back from a nice weekend and got the front axle complete and we are now getting our seat adjusted and installed. We are waiting on our parts orders to come in so we can work more on the car. Today we installed the remaining floor boards and will start to mount the battery box tomorrow. Less than 80 days until the first rally and we can't wait!!

After we got back from break we got right back to the car. One of the members has been working on the braking system. The fabrication team has put in the motor mount and is also working on the front axle mount. Some of the other members have been getting documentation in order and ready.

In the last two weeks we began constructing our final documentation binder, so we won't have so much to do later in the year. Also, the fabricators have constructed the front axle of the car and the axle mounts are designed and will be built shortly. We have begun installing the floor and and backrest for the seat. A member of our design team has been designing a brake pedal and assembly. The fabricators began positioning and welding the motor mount in. It's been a productive few weeks before the semester break. We'll see you in 2012!

Hello, I'm Cyle, our team's Public Relations man, and I'm here to tell you a little bit about the car. First things first- the frame. The frame has taken some time to complete with some of the snags we have ran into over the past few weeks. We have been constantly been revising the frame design throughout the process as different problems have come up. Many times, it is after we try to begin placing components and other parts into the car, that we have to problem solve to make everything work.

So far, we have used up well over 75 feet of aluminum square tube. We use the clamps on the aluminum tubes to keep all the frame members in place, while welding. We have quite a bit of the frame complete, only have the back to finish. We currently finished the roll bar, this week. We order two motors and we have recieved both. One of which was installed into our A59 car for testing to see how much better our Briggs and Stratton etek motor preforms compared to the Mars 708 motor we have used in the past.

This week our team has come up with a final design for our t shirts. We also began the welding process on the back on the frame for the rear wheel mount. Some team members have been working on the documention for our car by explaining the steps we have gone through so far. Today we finished watching the blooper video so we have a better understand of the races and what not to do!

The week of October 31st 2011 began with the start of building the rear end of the car. The front half of the frame is now completed, not including the roll bars. We are running 3 sets of support bars for the rear axle. Tubing is being bent instead of welded to offer more durability for this critical stress area. As of Friday the bottom set of tubes have been symmetrically bent using a shop press and a rolling tubing bender custom tooled by Adam. A jig has been made to hold the tubes in place for welding to the front half of the frame. Pictures have been taken and progress is being made on the documentation for the team. We are also designing team t-shirts to commerate the life of a former team member of DMS, Derek Schlief. I would like to give a special thanks to John Faircloth for selling us his Briggs and Stratton Etek Motor on Ebay. We assure you we will put the motor to good use and it will never be at the back of the pack.

We have continued to work on the front end of our frame.. Almost completed. We have ordered and recieved 2 etek electric motors. This week has been hectic because we have very crazy schedule bcause of playoffs and testing and and assembly which caused us to have shortened hours. We are still in progress of working on the tailend of the car. We have been building jigs for the fabrication team to use to build the rear end.

Things are moving right along. This week, we completed the front of the chassis. We also designed the rear wheel mount and motor mount that will be fabricated later on. We've completed our October newsletter. We are in the process of securing two Briggs and Straton E-tec motors. We are well on our way to completing the main chassis by middle of November which was our target time for completion.

This has been a productive week! Fabricators have completed tacking the bottom part of the frame. We are still looking at buying motors and parts. We have changed the design once again this will be the second time in 2 weeks. We did finish the mock up of the rear frame. Also have designated where we will be mounting the wheel and the motor. Documentation has been going great and hopefully stays that way.

This week has been fairly exciting. We have started ordering parts and have started building our frame. Also, we began a mock up of the rear of the car to see what we will do with that batteries, motor, and rear tire and how to fit it all together.

This week we have been very busy. Cyle typed up and mailed thank you letters to our sponsors who have donated to the project so far. After much debate, the team now has a final car design to work towards. Also, we have started to look for components for the car. on Wednesday, out potential drivers test drove the old A59 car to get a feel for a power drive car, find what worked well, and what can be improved when making our new car.

Welcome to the Dragon Garage blog. I am Adam, Fabricator/Designer/Public Relations for Dragon Motorsports - Power Drive 2011-2012. This season, each team member will take turns sharing what we are doing each week in this class. Personally, I am excited about our team this year, we are knowledgeable and are lucky enough to have each member bring a unique level of experience into this class.

Dragon Motorsports started their 2011-2012 season on August 17th making this only our eighth day in the class. But that doesn't mean we haven't gotten very much done. We have already elected positions and reached over a third of our fundraising goals. We have come up with an overall general design and are already half completed with that process of designing a computer model of the frame. Rally Results for the Advanced Car

The second Hasting Rally was very successful for the advanced car this year. Only two of our team members were able to attend due to the others having prior commitments. Non the less we were able to take home a trophy. We were awarded second in braking and set a new personal record in the distance the car went. The car went a total of 10 laps adding up to approximately 21.5 miles. This accomplishment also came without wasting the entire battery load so that they can be recharged and used for more races. Our overall placing was seventh place but we are looking to improve in our next rally.

Advanced Car April Progress Report

This April has been a very challenging one. Our first meet started with much anticipation hoping to see how well our car would do in its first race. This ended in disappointment when at the start of the race our steering arm broke off the gear while heading to the starting line. We came back and fixed the problem making it stronger than before. This taught us to be more cautious and triple check everything. Since this incident we have put the car through vigorous testing in steering and durability. The extra time between races has helped us in creating new mirrors and final touches on getting in and out of the car.

We have installed a second multimeter in the car for our testing. One of these meters will be testing volts and the other will tell us how many amps we are pulling. These multimeters will be able to tell us when the batteries are dieing and how we should gear the car. This will save battery life and make them reusable for more races.

March Progress Report for Advanced A59 car

This month we are working on getting the car put back together. We have focused on building our new steering system and installing it. Right now we are working out the details with spacing in the steering box. The steering box has now been welded and bolted into the car.
We have also started putting our new canopy together. We have created the outer frame work for it and also the hinge it will swing on. The main problem there will be attaching a gas shock that we can pull to open the canopy. With this new design the driver will be able to enter and exit the car easier and faster.
We also have started installing our new break pedal. Instead of running the cable for the brakes on the outside of the car we have moved them to the inside. this will create better air flow by removing the cable from just hanging out and making the siding of the car bulge outward.
The body design and paint scheme are also coming along well. last years crew won the best paint and body design award. this year we hope to win it again. We stripped the entire car for the new design this year which will resemble the car Elenore from the movie "Gone in 60 Seconds". The hardest part is creating the nose of the car. To make its complex design we made an extruded poly styrene mold. Then we applied plaster on the outside of the mold and after it dried we sanded it smooth. This process was repeated over the whole mold four times and several times to just fill in cracks. We then heated a poly styrene sheet and vacuumed it over the plaster design and hardened it. This will now be painted and attached to the car.
All of the Changes are coming along nicely so far and will be completed for our first rally.

Dragon Motorsports February Progress Report for the A59 car

Our electric car team continued on making changes to the advanced car. We finished designs on the steering system and have begun bulding the gear box and started developing design for the vertical steering arms to be sent off to be fabricated.

Our lead fabricator Hayden has also welded on the new brace bars, which now allow for easier entry and exit. We have also completed the new design for our brake pedal. Last year the old brake pedal failed during the power drive championships due to fatigue of its components. This year our brake pedal will be built much stronger to withstand the stress of rally season.

We are bulding a new nose cone that will hopefully resemble a classic muscle car look. To do this we are carving out a foam mold that we will use on our vaccum forming table. There plastic will be heated and stretched over the mold to create our final nose cone. This will be a lengthy process since we will be hand forming the foam with sanding blocks.

This week we finished cutting the bars to change the canopy so it is easier to get in and out and we are also in the process with making the blueprint of our new steering column.

So far this past week our lead fabricator, Hayden, has measured and cut two bars for the canopy. We have also been putting our heads together to come up with a new idea for our steering design.

Dragon Motorsports January Progress Report for the A59 car

The electric car class started in August and we started working right away. In August started calling up local business for donations. We will use a portion of these donations for the advanced and the other portion will go to the standard car. In September we started brainstorming ideas on how to change the adavanced car.

In October we started taking footage of the car in action for our multimedia project for documentation. In November we adjusted the camber angle to reduce some of the skidding we had during the state rally. We also started brainstorming ideas for a new steering system. In December we started designs on the new steering system. We wanted a skid steer steering system, where we have two handlebars mounted to the inside of the car's side panels.

In January we removed the front supports that braced the rollbar and are in the process of relocating them so they are wider apart to allow easier entry and exit. We also started and finished designs for the new steering system. We found that space would not allow our original idea and we decided to move the bars to the midddle. While we still thought this configuration was a good one, the components and space required would be too great to complete in time. We then discussed an alternative design using bevel gears that would allow for the same steering bar configuration. This design will use up less space in the driver compartment and will also be more robust during operation.

We started changes on our advanced car. We cut out the front bracing bars and we plan to put new braces in to allow for easier entry and exit of the vehicle. We also started on designs for the new steering idea. We began thinking of a new brake pedal idea.

We have finished our newsletter for December and sent it out to the people/businesses that have donated to us so far. We also have the frame for the new car mostly welded and have some new goals set that we have to accomplish before the Christmas break. We adjusted the camber angle on the advanced car to fix some of the wheel skid problem we saw during the state rally. Also we have started figuring out the new steering system we will put in the A59 car.

This week we completed many of our goals. A rough draft for our new car was created on CAD and we have started to perfect the design. On the new car we are trying to design a shock system so that the car isn't bouncing around as much. The old car was tested too and some broken parts were replaced. We are in the process of putting a meter in the old car so that we don't use too much battery during the meets. We also have met and exceeded our goal of calling 25 sponsors with many pledging support for this season. Next week we will have another meeting to discuss our old goals and create new ones.

Dragon Motorsports kicks off new season.

This year the team has decided to compete in both the advance and standard classes. We will create a brand new car as well as improve our car from last year which placed fifth overall. This might prove challenging since the car did so well. Cody and Chadd have already been contacting sponsors, and Hayden and Ryan have been working on design ideas for the new car while Steavan has been looking up required parts for the car. We're really excited to get started this season on our cars!!

Power Drive Championship Recap

The Dragon Motorsports team finished the season on a high note at the 2010 Power Drive championships at Mid America Motorplex last Saturday. The team performed very well and earned 4 awards. We placed 3rd in maneuverability with a season best average time of 17.55 seconds. The team earned 2nd in the documentation category and also was awarded the Ken Kitchen "Best Paint Award" We would especially like to thank Victory Too for the help on the car's appearance. Our fourth and final award of the competition was the 5th overall trophy.

Although the team performed very well there are still a few categories we are planning to improve on in the following season. The car's braking performance was not quite what we had expected and we also would like to log more laps in the endurance portion to compete with some of the elite teams. The Dragons Motorsports program has exceeded expectations in only the its second season in the Power Drive program. We hope to continue this trend in the following seasons.

Kearney Rally Results

We did pretty good at the Kearney Rally getting second in maneuverability and first in novice class endurance performance. We believe that we could have done better in endurance, so we have geared the car up, making it faster. We also installed the rear brake, hopefully giving us a better chance to place in braking competitions. Next in line is State and we hope to do excelling in it!

Dragon Motorsports Progress Report April 2010

Since the Hastings Rally, we have been working hard to improve the car's endurance. The most dramatic change is the body. We have finally finished painting the outer body and making a nose cone and tail. The nose cone was made out of plastic and made into shape with vacuum forming. The tail was made out of light plastic material and velcroed into place. With these improvements, we hope to increase our speed and endurance by reducing wind resistance.

Now that we're done with most of the installations, we have begun to test our braking and maneuverability. Steering around the cones is no problem for the car, however, braking may need some improvement, but as soon as we finish installing the rear brake cable, it should stop quicker. Upon more testing we discovered that there was too much weight in the front of the car. To correct this, we moved the ballast to the tail section of the car, balancing it out a bit.

The Kearney Rally is only a couple days away and we hope to have a better run than we did at Hastings.

The car is pretty much done. The outer body is finally finished and the car looks awesome. The only thing we need to do now is connect the rear wheel brake cable. Also, we are making plans to practice braking and maneuverability runs to be ready for the competition in Kearney.

We will also be displaying the car in the gym during our school play this weekend. We hope to gain some interest in our team now that the car is complete.

Week of April 12th

The first rally is in the books and the team gained some valuable data about the car after competing at Hastings.

First we found out just how much areodynamics can help a car save power, especially on a windy day. Also, we found out that our car failed to complete a full 60 minute race. We think our batteries were damaged from being drained too far during previous rallies, so they can not deliver full power. We will be purchasing new batteries for the Kearney and Championship rallies.

Not everything was negative, however, as we found our car to be very sturdy and reliable needing no repairs during the race.

This week we have installed a volt/amp meter and molded the nose cone from our plastic former. we have also continued to fill out our team documentation to be judged very soon.

Hastings, here we come!

Due to Easter Break, we were not able to completely finish our car. We will not be able to paint the car before the Hastings rally. We've managed to put the foam padding in the interior of the car that will protect the driver. We've also put the sticker showing our number on the side, making the car look awesome. The car is ready besides appearances and we are certain that we will improve on how we did last year.

Week of March 29 - April 1

For this week, the team has been putting the outer body together. To do this we cut plastic sheets to form correctly with the car's body and riveting them in place. Once this is finished we will paint the car black. We have also been working on the car's nose, To do this we glued styrofoam together, cut it down into a dome shape, and covered it in plaster. Next week we will sand it down, giving it a smooth surface. We will use this mold to vacuum form our plastic sheets into the final part. After that, we will pad the roll cage and the car will be ready for Hastings.

Dragon Motorsports Progress Report March 2010

The progress we have made on the car has gone up dramatically since our last report in February. For one, the car is now drivable and the team has been enjoying the last couple of weeks testing it out. Not only has it been fun, it has also been an amazing advantage. Because we have the car close to completion, we have time to make minor improvements that could give us a major advantage during a rally.

While driving the car around is fun, we've also made the necessary requirements for safety. The two front tires are equipped with brakes that stop the car fast and smooth. We've also installed two LED brake lights that will alert the other drivers. The five point safety harness was also installed easily and should safely secure the driver while he is racing.

All there is left to do is put the outer body onto the car. We have begun to glue plasic sheet to the frame and once that is done, all that remains is to paint it and apply our team name and numbers. We are getting very close to rally day and we have no doubt that we'll be prepared to put up some good numbers in our first competition of the season.

Week of March 22nd

At the start of this week we set a team goal of having the car ready one week began the first rally. This would allow us to find any problems with our car and to make adjustments to the final setup.

We were able to cross off many items from our 'To Do' list this week. First we attached and wired the brake lights to the car and tested to make sure they operated properly. The team was also able to mount the mirrors and make sure the visibility satisfied Power Drive rules. Lastly, towards the end of the week , we began safety pinning the front end components per Power Drive rules as well.

Week of March 15

The team was excited this week as we were finally able to take the car out for a test drive. Not only did we have fun driving the car around, we were all able to see what need to be improved so that it would be in excellent condition before the rally. After testing the steering radius, we decided to improve it in order to perform sharper turns, giving us an advantage in a rally. After some minor problems in the steering, we made stronger welds around the steering wheel. By doing this we lessen the chance of something breaking apart while the driver is making hard turns.

It has become a great advantage having the car drivable so early before the rallies. With all this extra time, we get the chance to make small improvements that could give us a better chance at winning a rally.

The week of March 8, 2010

This week the dragon motorsports team corrected the height problem with the front end and remounted the front end assembly back with proper adjustments. Also the team ordered two essential parts; a twist grip throttle and a set of rectangular rear view mirrors. The team is making the finishing touches on the front brakes. However, we will not hook up the rear brake until the Kearney rally. Hopefully next week we will have all of the wiring done and then we are looking forward to working on the body of the car.

We've entered the final month of preparations before the rally season. This week we mounted the tires on along with the steering assembly and did a push test on it around the shop. We check to see how well it would steer. However we experienced a minor setback. The front end ground clearance of the car was about an inch lower than we would have liked. To fix this problem we essentially "lifted" the front end by mounting the front wheel assemble 1 inch lower.

Dragon Motorsports Progress Report Febuary 2010

We are moving along smoothly since our last progress report. So far we have mounted the motor plate, the motor itself, the controller, the master disconnect switch, and the battery box. We are now moving along to the steering. We have yet to make the steering wheel which we have decided to be like a bicycle . Just a simple bar that moves back and forth, turning the the wheels left and right. Getting this part done should be relatively simple but there may be hitches in the plan as to how it will fit into the car. We still have to put a lot of things into the car interior. The list is as follows: the seat, safety harness, volt and amp meters, throttle and brake pedals, as well as minor wiring. For the exterior, we are still deciding what kind of brake light we are going to use and we have yet to put the exterior body on itself. But so far we are confident that we will be finished for the rallies next month.

The team is also experimenting with polystyrene plastic and attempting to make body panels and a nose cone for the car. This process is done by placing a plastic sheet over heating elements. The plastic is heated to 325-350 degrees until the plastic loses its elasticity. The plastic is then quickly taken out of the oven and then placed on a vacuum platten with holes. These holes are so that a vacuum can suck the plastic down on molds set onto the board. These will give the plastic their form. This process is not perfect, and may require several tries in order to get the perfect coatings.

To start the week of we welded support braces on the frame next to front steering assembly. The purpose of this was to add support to the front end and strengthen the frame. The monthly progress report has begun, and will be posted at the end of the month. We have also started to fabricate the front steering assembly.

Week of February 8th

In the past two weeks, we have gotten plenty of items completed on the car. Last week we welded in the motor bracket and bracing and also practiced vacu-forming plastic body panels for the car. This week we mainly focused on attaching the electronic components and doing the finishing touches on the rear drive assembly. The Altrax was hooked up and working properly. With many of the electrical components set in order the main task ahead is to finish fabricating the steering mechanism.

The Week of January 25

The Dragon Motorsports team worked very hard this week and got some big jobs done. The front axle mount was finished this week and bolted on. Also we started fabricating the brake pedal assembly. This new assembly will work better and will be easier to use than last year's design. Also we reicieved the motor mount from MBR. We are hoping to get the motor mounted on the car by next week.

Dragon Motorsports Progress Report January 2010

We have come a long way since August. By far we have progressed much faster than last year’s team. In August, we began by collecting sponsors around the community. After some generous donations of 1 inch square aluminum tubing, we went work right away on the frame. Since then, the frame has been steadily built up to what it is now. Donations from Reinke Mfg. and Metal Quest have gotten us a slick freewheel mounting hub for the rear tire and steering spindles for the front. We have also received some generous money donations from businesses around the area (List shown in an earlier post) and have already purchased most of the parts we require.

As of right now, we have just completed mounting the rear wheel. With the frame finished, we are struggling as to how we are going to steer the vehicle. The frame is much smaller than last year’s car. It is going to be a problem getting in and out to the car let alone dodging a steering wheel. One idea is it will be a simple handlebar that we swivle left and right, allowing more room for the driver to get in and out without much difficulty. Once that is figured out, we will mount the motor and wire the vehicle. We are still making decisions on how we will cover the frame. We have an idea of using a cloth material that is used on airplanes. With the rallies closing in, we are confident that we will have a running car by then.

Week of January 18

Another productive week is in the books for the Dragon Motorsports team as again we made great strides towards completing the car before the first rally. The front end mounting brackets were welded on this week. We troubleshoot the rear wheel mount and now it is ready for the chain and motor. MBR has generously offered to fabricate our motor mount. The week of January 11

The week of January 11 was a very productive week for the Dragon Motorsports team. On monday to start it off we went to Metal Quest in Hebron and watched them fabricate our spindles and our axle. Also we recieved a tour of the facilities and learned how their high tech mills and lathes worked. On Tuesday we began installing the rear axle and working on the front axle assembly. The remainder of the week we spent fabricating the front axle assembly and positioning the motor for mounting. We also recieved the 5 point safety belt and began to work on attaching it.

Trip to MetalQuest

On Monday we visited Metal Quest in Hebron Nebraska for some of our parts that have been made for us. These parts will be used on the front and rear wheels. We were able to watch them make our parts. We thanked them for their help in making these parts for us.
